Measurement

        1. Convert the following units as mentioned below.

                     a. 1m = …………… cm

                               1m =  1 x 00 = 100 cm

                     b. 2.5 m = ………… cm

                               1 m = 100 cm

                               2.5 m = 2.5 x 100 = 250 cm

                     c. 250 cm = ……….. m

                               1 m = 100 cm

                               250 cm = 250 ÷ 100 = 2.5 m

                     d. 1.5 l = ………….. ml

                               1 L = 1000 ml

                               1.5 L = 1.5 x 1000 = 1500 ml

                     e. 750 ml = ……….. l

                                1 L = 1000 ml

                                750 ml = 750 ÷ 1000 = 0.75 L

                     f. 1500 g = ……….. kg

                                1 kg = 1000 g

                                1500 g = 1500 ÷ 1000 = 1.5 kg

                     g. 4.5 kg = ………... g

                                1 kg = 1000 g

                                4.5 kg = 4.5 x 1000 = 4500 g

                     h. 7 tonnes = ……… kg

                                 1 t = 1000 kg

                                 7 t = 7 x 1000 = 7000 kg

                     i. 2500 kg = ……….. t

                                  1 t = 1000 kg

                                  2500 kg = 2500 ÷ 1000 = 2.5 t

               2. Sonam wants to carpet his sitting room. It is 5 meters long and 4 meters wide. How many square                       meters of carpet will he need to buy?

                       we need to find the area of sitting room

                       A = L x W

                            = 5 m x 4 m = 20 m^2

                             therefore, Sonam need to buy 20 square meters of carpet.

              3. Tashi and his friends wants to paint the classroom wall which is 5 meters by 4 maters. If 10                               square meters need 1 liter of paint, how much paint will they need to buy to paint all the four                           walls?

                          Area of the wall.

                          A = L x W

                             = 5 m x 4 m = 20 m^2

                          Area of all four walls = 20 x 4

                                                            = 80 m^2

                          therefore, 80 ÷ 10 = 8. so, Tashi and his friends need to buy 8 liters of paint.

                4. The volume of the box is 216 cubic centimeters. Find the length of each side of the box.

                          given: v= 216 cm^3

                                     v = l x w x h

                                     216 = 6cm x 6cm x 6cm

                          one possible answer (length = 6cm, width = 6cm  and  height = 6cm)

                 5. A swimming pool is rectangular in shape. it is 12 meters long, 8 meters wide and 400                                       centimeters deep. What is the volume of the swimming pool in cubic meters?

                           convert 400 cm to m

                            1 m = 100 cm

                            400 cm = 400 ÷ 100 = 4 m  (400 cm = 4m)

                            V = l x w x h

                               = 12m x 8m x 4m

                               = 384 m^3

                            therefore, the volume of the swimming pool is 384 cubic meters.

                   6. how much water is needed to fill a water tank that is 150 cm long, 100 cm wide and 300 cm                             deep? (find the answer in liters)                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    Volume of the tank

                              V= l x w x h

                                 = 150cm x 100cm x 300cm

                                 = 4,500,000 cm^3

                                            1 ml = 1 cm^3

                              4,500,000 ml = 4,500,000 cm^3

                              1L = 1000 ml

                              4,500,000 ml = 4,500,000 ÷ 1000

                                                    = 4,500 L

                                     therefore, 4,500 L of water is needed to fill a water tank that is 4,500,000 cm^3

                  7. The volume of a rectangular prism is 120 m^3. If it is 5 meters long and 4 meters wide, what                             will be the height of the prism?

                             V = l x w x h                                           OR         120 ÷ 5 = 24

                              120 = 5 x 4 x 6                                                      24 ÷ 4 = 6

                             so, height = 6 m                                                    so, height = 6 m

                    8. Dorji, a farmer from Phobjikha produced 2 tonnes of potatoes. If he gets Nu. 40 per kg, how                            many ngultrums will he get?

                              convert tonne to kg

                              1 t = 1000 kg

                              2 t = 2 x 1000 = 2000 kg

                              so, 2000 x 40 = 80,000

                              therefore, he will get Nu. 80,000

                     9. The area of a rectangle is 24 cm^2. If Karma doubles both the length and width of a                                          rectangle, what will be the area of the new rectangle?

                              A = l x w

                              24 = 6 x 4     (one possible answer: l = 6cm  and w = 4cm)

                                double both length and width

                              A = l x w

                                 = 12 x 8

                                 = 96 cm^2

Sloved questions on SI unit

questions on SI unit (VI)

 1. Pema rode 3 kilometers on his bike. his sister Sonam rode 2500 meters on her bike. Who rode the farthest and by how much more (answer in km)?

Ans:  Pema rode 3 km

          Sonam rode 2500 m                 we know 1km = 1000 m

                                                                            2500m = 2500 ÷ 1000

                                                                                          = 2.5 km

           since 3km is greater than 2.5km, Pema rode farthest by 0.5km (3 - 2.5 = 0.5)

2. Dawa is measuring two-line segments. The first line segment is 30 cm long. The second line segment is 500 mm long. How long are the two-ling segments put together? (answer in cm)

Ans: first line segment = 30 cm

         second line segment = 500 mm

                                                            we know 1cm = 10 mm

                                                                            500 mm = 500 ÷ 10

                                                                                          = 50 cm

            when two line segments put together:    30 cm + 50 cm =  80 cm

3. Penjor wants to send a box of oranges to a friend by mail. The box of oranges cannot exceed a mass of 5 kg. If each oranges has a mass of 200 g, what is the maximum number of oranges she can send?

Ans:  each oranges has a mass of 200 g.

           box of oranges cannot exceed 5 kg.

                                          convert 200 g to kg

                                           we know 1 kg = 1000 g

                                                            200g = 200 ÷ 1000

                                                                      = 0.2 kg

             since each oranges is 0.2 kg, Penjor can send 25 oranges. (5 ÷ 0.2 = 25)

4. Tashi grew 10.5 centimeters in 1 year. He is now 1.6 m tall. How tall was Tashi 1 year ago? (answer in cm)

Ans: Tashi grew 10.5 cm each year

         Present height = 1.6 m  (convert 1.6 m to cm)

                                  we know 1 m = 100 cm

                                                  1.6 m = 1.6 x 100

                                                            = 160 cm

              Tashi's height 1 year ago:  160 cm - 10.5 cm

                                                         = 149.5 cm tall

5. Wangmo has a glass that can hold 250 ml of water. If she wants to fill a jug which can hold 2 litres of water, how many glasses of water does she need to fill the jug to the brim?

Ans: capacity of jug is 2 litres

         capacity of glass is 250 ml  (convert 250ml to l)

                                                    we know 1L = 1000 ml

                                                                    250ml = 250 ÷ 1000

                                                                               = 0.25 L

            to fill the jug to the brim: 2 ÷ 0.5 = 8

           therefore, Wangmo needs 8 glasses of water to fill the jug to the brim.

6. Penjor walks 500 m every day. How many kilometers does he walk in a week?

Ans: Penjor walks 500 m per day.

                                     convert 500 m to km

                                     we know 1 km = 1000 m

                                                     500 m = 500 ÷ 1000 = 0.5 km (1 day)

           in a week he walks: 0.5 x 7    (7 days in a week)

                                            = 3.5 km
